Shoulder Complex Joint Flashcards
Sternoclavicular Joint
Medial end of clavicle and sternum
Acromioclavicular Joint
Lateral end of clavicle and the acromion of the scapula
Scapulothoracic Joint
Not a true joint; combination of sternoclavicular and acromioclavicular joint
Glenhumeral Joint
Head of humerus and the glenoid fossa
Movement of each
1) Sternoclavicular Joint- 3 axes of rotation
2) Acromioclavicular Joint- Upward and downward rotation
3) Scapulothoracic Joint- Elevation/depression, protraction/retraction, upward/downward rotation
4) Glenohumeral Joint- ball-and-socket joint
Coraclavicular Ligament
-A short, strong ligament that connects the coracoid process of the scapula (shoulder blade) to the clavicle (collarbone).
- Tear comes from falling/striking the tip of shoulder against the ground
Anterior Band
-Strongest/thickest part of shoulder capsule
-Most taut at 90 degrees abduction
- Add further tension with external rotation
“Cocking” baseball can overstretch anterior band
Glenoid Labrum
-Fibrocartilage ting that encircles the glenoid fossa
-Helps stabilize the joint
-Increases contact area with humeral head
Difference between shoulder girdle muscles and shoulder joint muscles
-Shoulder girdle muscles attatch to clavicle or scapula, not to the humerus
-Shoulder girdle muscles do not partake in shoulder movement
