Wrist and Hand Joint Flashcards
Major articulations at wrist & hand
-Radiocarpal: 80% of compressive force is transmitted to radial
-Mid-carpal Joint: medial/lateral compartment (lateral has less movement than medial)
TFC and associated ligaments
-Triangular fibrocartilage complex
-Ligaments
1) Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL)
2) Palmar ulnocarpal ligament
3) Articular disc
Central Column Model
-Center of rotation: base of capitate
-Central Column
1) 3rd Metacarpal
2)Capitate
3) Lunate
4) Radius
Wrist-only extensors
1) Extensor carpi radialis longus
2) Extensor carpi radialis brevis
3) Extensor capri ulnaris
Wrist-Finger extensors
1) Extensor digitorum
2) Extensor digit minimi
Extensor retinaculum
-Forms individual compartments
- Prevents the underlying tendons from “bowstringing” up and away
Wrist flexors
1) Flexor carpi radialis
2) Flexor carpi ulnaris
3)Palmaris longus
Palmar Carpal Ligament
-Stabilize the wrist joint
-Similar function as the extensor retinaculum
Thumb Movement
-Flexion and Extension
-Adduction and Abduction
-Opposition
Intristic Muscles
(thenar + hypothenar muscles)
