Ankle Joint Flashcards
Bones at the ankle
talus & tibia, fibula,
calcaneus, navicular
Role of Talus Bone
Weight bearing link between tibia and foot
Articulations at the ankle
-Tibiotalar- fibia and talus
-Talocrural- distal fibula, tibia, and talus
- Subtalar- Talus and calcaneus
- Midtarsal- talonavicular and calcaneocuboid
Movement of the ankle
-Tibiotalar: plantar/dorsi flexion
- Talocrural: Stretches talofibular ligament, Stabilizes joint
-Subtalar: Allows eversion and inversion
-Midtarsal: shock absorption of forefoot
Roles of Achilles Tendon
-Achilles tendon lengthens during
stance phase of walking/running
-Energy storage and return
3 foot arches
1) Medial longitudinal (supported by active/passive mechanisms)
2) Lateral longitudinal (disappears when bearing weight)
3) Transverse (metatarsals)
Functions of the foot arch
-weight support, reduce shear stress
Pes Planus
-Abnormally dropped medial longitudinal arch
- Compromised ability to dissipate loads
- Increased muscular activity to compensate for the loss
