5 prayers are offered each day. Face toward Mecca.
Pillars of Islam: Fasting: During what month do Muslims fast? What do they abstain from?
They fast during the month of Ramadan, from sun-up to sun-down. They abstain from food, drink, smoking, and sexual contact.
Pillars of Islam: Help the Poor (Giving of Alms): Who do Muslims give a percentage of their wealth to? How much of their wealth do they give?
They give it to the community treasury, for the poor. They give about 2.5% of their wealth.
Pillars of Islam: Make a Pilgrimage (Hajj) Where are all Muslims expected to go once in their lifetime? What does this relate to?
Muslims are expected to make a pilgrimage to Mecca, in Saudi Arabia. It relates to Abraham, who went where God told him to go.
The Hijra: Where did Muhammad and his followers go? Why did they leave? (this is known as the Hijra).
They fled to Medina because they were being persecuted by people of Mecca.

Early Caliphs: The first established Caliph was Abu Bakr. What does Caliph also mean?
Successor
Early Caliphs: Abu Bakr: He was successful in ensuring that the tribes did not break off and actually began to grow the Islamic Empire. What else did he do?
He collected taxes and ensured that the religion would continue to grow. On his death bed, he nominated the second caliph, Omar.
