Q

Identify and explain 4 “new issues” that have arisen under the YCJA. Which “new issue” do you believe to be the most pressing (I.e., we should be focusing on to correct) why? Explain your answer.

A

Age and adult accountability
- youth can be held in adult institutions in some cases
Pretrial detention
- increasing with YCJA (esp. with indigenous youth)
- Bill C10 promises to continue the increasing rates by making it easier for courts to detain youths on a pre-trial basis
Release conditions
- criminalize more youth (because the conditions are too restrictive for teens to live up to)
Parental rights/supports
- does not adequately support parents who want to help their kids and be effective
Cross-over kids:
- start in welfare system or foster care (under age 12) who become involved in CJS; from one state program to CJS
REASON
- I think we should focus on the cross-over kids, especially those who age out of the system and have no place to go so they begin involving themselves in crime.
- Within the foster care system there needs to be more services accessible such as how to find housing, substance abuse programs and therapy
