What is shock?
This is a life threatening condition that happens when the body isn’t getting enough blood flow. This can damage organs and requires immediate medical treatment
What are the reasons shock is caused?
→ Loss of blood from internal and external bleeding
→ Loss of plasma or fluids eg. Burns, vomiting, dehydration
→ Allergic reaction
→ Infections
→ Heart trouble
→ Poisoning by chemicals, gases, alcohol or drugs
→ Snake and animal bites
→ Respiratory problems, chest trauma
→ Lack of oxygen
→ Obstructions caused by choking
Injuries of all types both minor and severe
What are the signs and symptoms shock?
→ Rapid pulse
→ Pale grey blue skin
→ Capillary test will be slower
Sweating and cold clammy skin
as it develops → Starts feeling cold → Weakness and giddiness → Nausea and possibility vomiting → Thrust → Rapid shallow breathing → A weak thready pulse
As brains O2 levels drop → Restless, anxious and even aggressiveness → Yawn and gasp for air → Unconsciousness → Finally the heart will stop
What to do in response to shock?
○ Unconscious and breathing place into recovery
○ If conscious lay the casualty flat onto their back
○ Promptly control any bleeding and manage other injuries
○ Call 000 for assistance
○ Make them feel comfortable
○ Keep them warm if they’re cold
○ Continue to monitor the casualties physical condition
○ You can moisten the casualty’s lips but be sure they do not eat or drink
If they’re unresponsive and not breathing normally follow DRS ABCD
