Sheila Flashcards
NOT AS NAIVE AS FIRST COMES ACROSS
First says “OH DARLING”(KISSES GERALD HASTILY)
Then says “LAST SUMMER WHEN YOU NEVER CAME NEAR ME “ → shows she understands what is going on and although is presented as superficial she isn’t stupid
“I SEE NO POINT IN MENTIONING THE SUBJECT ESPECIALLY (INDICATES SHEILA)” - mr b
→ they want to shield her but she knows also shows how Mr B feels she can’t listen because she is a woman (inferior) yet she shows at end she is strongest
SHALLOW/ JEALOUS
“LOOK MUMMY ISN’T A BEAUTY” →refers to a ring shows she is materialistic which makes her look shallow
“WAS SHE PRETTY” →askes inspector yet it shouldn’t matter makes it seem as though death would be more tragic if she was pretty
“I COULNT FEEL SORRY FOR HER” → she has so much jealousy she cant feel empathy *( blinded by it) doesn’t think about how selfish and how it will affect Eva
RESPECTS HONESTY
“ALRIGHT GERALD YOU NEED’NT LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT ATLEAST I AM TRYING TO TELL THE TRUTH” → imperative “needn’t” understands the importance of truth and how people have to stand by their actions
“AND THAT IS ABOUT THE BEST THING YOU HAVE SAID TONIGHT, ATLEAST IT’S HONEST” → brutality of her words and how harsh she is a stark antithesis to the beginning of the play shows her maturity
RESPECTS HONESTY
“THESE GIRLS AREN’T CHEAP LABOUR THEY’RE PEOPLE” → declarative shows how strongly she feels and she carries message of the play
“THAT WON’T BRING HER BACK TO LIFE WILL IT?” → Imperative and rhetorical question shows her disappointment when her family don’t follow in her footsteps. She understands the consequences of what she has done
