Q

IGNORANCE

A

“ALL THESE SILLY LITTLE WAR SCARES” → shows his and is dramatic irony because he looks sill for not believing the scares since they actually are true and angers the audience as they know how bad war is and not a joke

“LETS JUST SAY IN 1940 YOU WILL BE HAVING A PARTY JUST LIKE THIS YOUR SONS AND DAUGHTERS MIGHT BE GETTING ENGAGED” → there will be war

Q

ARROGANCE

A

“I GATHER THERE WAS A VERY GOOD CHANCE OF A KNIGHTHOOD” → Trying to emphasise how great he is and knights are thought to be most respected and chivalrous - ironic how he throws Eva out onto street.

“YOU! YOU DONT EVEN SEEM TO CARE BUT I CARE, I WAS ALMOST CERTAIN FOR A KNIGHTHOOD IN THE NEXT HONOURS LIST” → declaratives shows his obsession with status and makes him look shallow that he is not worried about Eva. ‘certain’ shows how he thinks he is better than everyone that he was going to get it.

Q

REMORSELESS/ CAPITALIST

A

“I CANT EXCEPT REPOSNISIBLITY. IF WE WERE ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTINNG IN LIFE IT WOULD BE VERY AWKWARD” → awkwardness is trivial compared to saving lives and this shows how he is heartless and only cares for himself.

“THERE WILL BE A PUBLIC SCANDAL” → more worried about how it will reflect on him rather than Eva’s life. Declarative emphasises his fear ( as if this could be the worst thing to happen to him)

STATUS OBSESSED

A

“YOU MUST GIVE ME A LIST OF THOSE ACCOUNTS, I’VE GOT TO COVER THIS UP” → modal verbs and imperative “you must” shows his desperation to not dampen his status. More worried about this than stealing?
