"I THREATEND TO MAKE A ROW" →conveys how the upper class abused their power over the working class (treated Eva like an animal). Forced her do everything and was abusive

→ emphasises how he is not status obsessed and understands people should face up to their mistakes. he seems more noble
ACCEPTS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
“THE FACT REMAINS I DID WHAT I DID” → declarative shows he understands what he has done and knows that he cant change it
“ITS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE GIRL AND WHAT WE HAVE ALL DONE TO HER THAT MATTERS”
→ shows he cares for Eva and feels guilty so despite what he has done audience forgives him
