What kind of goats do we have?
Mostly Boer, meat goats.
Also some kiko and crosses between the two.
WHen are goats bred?
Fall. Kid in the spring.
Majorty of our sheep? Describe
Polled dorset. Wothout horns and can bred outside of season.
What was the name of the first polled dorset? Unique?
Ram 402. All polled dorset can be traced back to him.

What other sheep do we have?
Suffolk, Hampshire
A crossbred of those two often called black face sheep.
Why called black face sheep?
Black hair on face instead of wool.
What is the hair breed of sheep?
Katahdin.
What can Katahdin do?
Use their tail to store fat!
What is currently being indroduced? Why?
Finnsheep. KNown for fertility.
When are sheep bred? When lamb?
Early spring (march) and lamb early fall (aug sep)
Who normally has their tailed docked? Why>
Wool breeds. For hygine and health.
What can happen if undocked?
Waste product gets stuck on tail, flies lay their eggs, causes flystrike.
What is flystrike?
The maggots from the flies eat away at the sheep skin.
How are sheep castrated and docked? Why?
With bands. When several day olds. Are bloodless.
Why trim feet?
Prevents foot rot!
What is foot rot caused by?
anaerobic bacteria.
Why does trimming stop foot rot.
Keeps the foot exposed to air, kills bacteria.
Fot root causes
Portions of the bone to get eaten away. Results in lameness and unable to walk.
How do you know if an animal needs to be treated for parasites?
Color of the inside of the eyelids.
What is a good color for eyelid?
Red is good. Pale and white is bad.
What is used to compare color?
Famacha score cards.
When shearing or trimmin, what should you do?
Throwing them.
What does throwing a sheep mean?
They are placed on their rump with legs off the group so they dont struggle.
Where cant a sheep see?
Right behind their rump.
How much vison do sheep have?
270 degrees.
What is a sheeps flight zone?
MInimum zone of confort that sheep maintain between themselves and others.
What is a sheeps flight distance?
How far they will run when their flight zone is violated.
What influences flight zone and distance?
Genetics and previous experiances.
When handling sheep, what five things should be kept in mind?
1) Sheep move more readily when the wind in their faces than at their backs;
2) Sheep move more readily going uphill than downhill;
3) Sheep have a tendency to move toward light;
4) Sheep often refuse to cross a shadow; and
5) Sheep are extremely sensitive to excessive noise and high frequency sounds.
Why bone called break joint?
Can be broken with pressure.
In adult sheep, what does the break joint become?
The spool joint.
When a lamb is born, what does it have?
4 pairs of teeth of temperary incisors in ints lower jaw.
What happens to sheep age as they get older?
Each year, one paur of the temperatory incisors is replaced with perminante incisors.
