They are prey animals.. The natural instinct when they are frightend or alarmed is to flee or escape.

Where should you never be when working with a horse?

How do we tell a horses age?
Lots of ways! Galvanye groove, milk teeth, or adult teeth.
When do horses get their baby/milk teeth?
7 days, 7 weeks, and 7 months.
3 sets of incisors.
A foal with a complete set of baby teeth
at least 7 months old.
A foal with 2 sets of baby teeth.
Somewhere between 7 weeks and 7 months old.
When does the first set of adult incisiors coe in?
2.5 years.
When does the second set of incisors come in?
3.5 years.
When does the third set of incisors come in?
4.5 years.
A foal with 2 sets of adult teeth and 1 set of baby teeth would be?

What is the name of the tooth grove used to tell age?
Galvanye’s groove.
How can we find galvanye’s groove?
Be felt by moving finger across the upper outer incisor.
When is the groove noticable near the gum line?
at 10 years old.
When is the grooce half way done?
15 years.
When is the groove the entire length of the incisor?
20 years old.
After the groove fills the tooth, what?
It will start to receed.
When the groove is half of the incisor starting from the bottm, what?
25 years old.
When the horse is 30, what?
The groove is gone.
If you want to move behind a horse, what do you do?
Touch them to let them know that you are there and stay close to them or you need to stay about a horses length behind them.
Horses have all of their mature teeth by what age?

What are hooks?
small curves on their incisors.
When do horses get hooks?
when they are 7 and 13-14 years old.
How are incisors differently shaped in young horses?
Tend to be more round on their ends and their orientation to the upper and lower plate in prependicular (more of a 90 degree angle)
How are incisors differently shaped in older horses?
The incisors tend to be more triangular on their ends and their orientation to the upper and lower palate is more of an angle protruding forward.
WHat is the space between the incisors and the pre-molars and morals on each side of the jaw?
Interdental space.
What is sometimes in the interdental space?
Canines.
WHo has canines?
Stallions, Geldings, and some more masculine mares.
What might happen with canines.
They may get removed becuase they often interfere with the bit.
Which side should you go on for horses? Why?
Their left. Military soliders wore swoards on their left side.

Why groom? (4)
Health care. Removes debris from horse that could cause issues with the saddle. Allows the owner to inspect the entire surface of the horse or wounds or issues.
Also a way for the owner to bond with their horse.
Describe a curry comb.
A brush with short, rigid rubber teeth in circular patterns.
How do you use the curry comb? Whats the point?
Brused in circlular motions aganst the hair grain.
Loosen up any mud or caked on materials. Remove course objects from the hair
Describe stiff brush. What fore?
Long stiff brisles and also remove course material from the horse hair.
Describe the soft or finishing brush. What for?
Soft bristles that remove fine particulate matter.
Describe face brush. What for?
Soft, short bristles. Used to groom around the ears, nose, eyes, and mouth.
What is the hoot pick for?
Remove mud, rocks, and other debris from the horse’s feet.
