SHE 2 Flashcards

1
Q

what is nanotechnology

A

nanotechnology is the science, engineering and technology conducted at the nanoscale, which is about 1 to 100 nanometres.

2
Q

how did romans use nanotech

A

the Romans created the Lycurgus Cup which had silver and gold nanoparticles embedded into it which mad it shine red/purple when light shone through it but green when there was no direct light.

3
Q

what is colloidal gold

A

colloidal gold is a suspension of gold nano particles in a solvent which is often water which leads them to have different optical, electronic and thermal properties.

Q

what are uses of colloidal gold

A

colloidal gold was used in medieval times as stained glass

it can be used as an anti inflammatory similar to colloidal silver

electron microscopy

6
Q

what did John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter Brattain discover, in 1947

A

they invented the transistor which is a small semiconductor that used germanium.

it was able to turn off and on billions of times a second while requiring low energy.

they amplify weak electrical impulses

8
Q

why are transistors important to the information age

A

they are used in almost every modern technology such as smart phones and PCs therefore without them it would be impossible

9
Q

what are nanotubes and why are they important

A

carbon nanotubes are fullerenes of carbon 1 atom thick rolled into a tube shape that is harder than diamond but also more flexible than rubber

they could be used on satellites to make them very dark so that there is even less light pollution

Q

how is nanotechnology used is medicine

A

due to different types of cells having different properties nanotechnology can be used to recognise certain cells and target them while avoiding others entirely

gold nanoparticles can target Tumour Necrosis Agent which binds to it and hides it from the immune system which allows them to accumulate in the tumour and kill it

silver nanoparticles are used on wound dressings as an antibacterial as they rapidly penetrate the bacterial membrane and destroy the cellular structure

11
Q

why might nanoparticles be dangerous

A

they may damage the lungs as the nanoparticles can get really deep in the lungs

they may also create more free radicals that damage DNA

they may be able penetrate the blood brain barrier
