Chapter 5: Ionic Bonding Flashcards
how are ionic compounds formed
electrons from valence shells are given or gained to form ions.
ions that are positively charged and negatively charged bond together through electrostatic attraction
generally a metal or non-metal or two elements with differing electronegativities
why are ionic substances brittle, high melting point, no electrical conductivity while solid but not while liquid
brittle: when the ionic lattice shifts, same charges align and they repel
high melting point: electrostatic attraction is strong which holds the structure together. high amounts of energy required to break lattice.
conductivity: there are no free moving charged particles while solid but when liquid ions are free to move and conduct electricity.
