Understand the SHARP and EO programs
What is the purpose of the army SHARP program?
To reinforce the army’s commitment to eliminate incidents of sexual assault through a comprehensive policy that centers around awareness and prevention.
When does the army policy on SHARP apply?
Both on and off post, during duty and non-duty hours.
What are the goals of the SHARP program?
- Create a climate that minimizes sexual assault incidents
- Create a climate that encourages victims to report incidents
- Establish training and awareness programs to educate soldiers
- Ensure sensitive and comprehensive treatment to restore a victim’s health
- Ensure leaders understand their roles and responsibilities regarding response to SA victims, thoroughly investigate allegations of SA, and take appropriate disciplinary action.
Define sexual assault
Intentional sexual contact, characterized by use of force, physical threat or abuse of authority or when a victim does not or cannot consent.
Sexual assault includes what acts?
- rape
- non consensual sodomy
- indecent assault
- attempts to commit these acts
More than half of sexual assault offenses include what substance?
Alcohol
What is the army’s policy on sexual assault?
- SA is a criminal offense that has no place in the army.
- The army will use training, education, and awareness to minimize sexual assault
- The army will treat all victims with dignity, fairness, and respect
If someone has been sexually assaulted, to whom may they report the crime?
- Their chain of command
- Medical treatment facility
- Military police / criminal investigation division
- Chaplains
- Social work services
- Family advocacy
- Legal services
What regulation covers the rights of crime victims, and what are they?
AR 27-10
- to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect for privacy
- to be protected from the accused offender
- to be notified of court proceedings
- to be present at all public court proceedings
- to talk to the attorney for the government in the case
- to seek restitution, if appropriate
- to information regarding conviction, sentencing, imprisonment, and release of the offender from custody
What are the categories of sexual harassment?
Verbal: sexual jokes/comments, explicit profanity, threats
Nonverbal: staring, notional actions that imply sexual conduct
Physical Contact: unsolicited touching
