What are the basic colors of a map and what do they represent?
Black: man-made features
Red-Brown: changes in elevation, relief features, and cultural features
Blue: water features
Green: vegetation with military significance
Brown: Relief features, elevation, and cultivated land
Red: populated areas, main roads and boundaries
Other: occasionally other colors may be used to show special information
What are military symbols?
Figures used to represent types of military organizations, installations and activities.
Where is the legend of the map found?
Lower left margin.
What are the 3 types of contour lines?
- Index
- Intermediate
- Supplementary
How many Mils are in one degree?
17.7
What are the 3 types of North on a military map?
- True north
- Magnetic north
- Grid north
What shape of contour lines indicates a hill?
Contour lines forming concentric ccles, with the smallest closed circle being the hilltop.
What shape indicates a saddle?
An hourglass shape.
What shape indicates a valley?
Either U shaped or V shaped lines.
What shape indicates a ridge?
A U or V shape in which the closed end of the contour line points away from the high ground (looks like consecutive hills).
What shape represents a depression?
Closed contour lines that have tick marks pointing toward low ground.
What shape indicates a draw?
U or V shaped lines pointing toward high ground.
What shape indicates a spur?
U or V shaped lines pointing away from high ground.
What shape indicates a cliff?
Lines very close together and in some cases touching each other.
What must you do with a map before using it to navigate?
It must be oriented.
What are 5 major terrain features found on a map?
- Hill
- Ridge

- Valley
- Depression
What are the 3 minor terrain features found on a military map?
- Draw
- Spur
- Cliff
What are the 2 supplementary terrain features found on a military map?
Cut and Fill
What is an azimuth?
A horizontal angle, measured in a clockwise manner from a north base line, expressing direction.
What is vertical distance?
The distance between the highest and lowest points measured.
What is a contour interval?
The vertical distance between adjacent contour lines on a map.
Which north is used when using a military map?
Magnetic north when using a compass, and grid north when using a map.
What are the 2 ways to hold a compass?
Compass to cheek method and Center Hold method.
What do topographic symbols represent?
Man-made and natural features.
