Sharing The Road Flashcards
What are no-zones?
No-zones are the areas around trucks/buses where cars can either disappear into blind spots or are so close that they restrict the truck or bus driver ability to stop or maneuver safely.
What is the number one rule for passing a large truck or bus?
Do not pull in front of a truck or bus until you can see the entire front of the vehicle
The bigger the truck/bus, the……
Bigger the blind spots. More room they need to maneuver. Longer it takes them to stop. Longer it takes them to accelerate. Longer it takes to pass them. More likely you’re going to be the loser in a collision.
The average freight train traveling at 55 m.p.h. requires approximately ____ to stop.
One mile
Light rail vehicle topping distance at 55 m.p.h.? 25 m.p.h.?
450 feet. 110 feet.
What is the standard height overhead wires? (LRV)
18 feet, 6 inches
What are the three options drivers have in order to avoid a collision?
Stop or slow down.
Turn.
Speed up.
How do you quickly stop a vehicle that is equipped with anti-lock braking system?
Slam the brake to the floor and don’t let off.
How do you quickly stop a vehicle that is not equipped with ABS?
Apply the brakes as hard as you can without locking them. If the brakes lock up, you will feel the vehicle start to skid. Quickly let up on the brake pedal. Once it stops skidding, push down on the brake pedal again. Keep doing this.
True or false: in most cases, you can turn a vehicle faster than you can stop it.
True.
Can you quickly turn without skidding with ABS?
Yes.
How do you turn quickly without the help of ABS?
Step on the brake pedal, but then let up and turn the steering wheel
What do you do if you have brake failure?
Try pumping the break to build up enough pressure to allow you to stop. If that doesn’t work, use the parking/emergency brake. Pull on the parking brake slowly so you will not lock the rear wheels. Release if you do skid. If this doesn’t work, shift into lower fears and pull off the road
What do you do if your tire blows?
Hold the steering wheel tightly, and keep the vehicle going straight. Take your foot off the gas and use brake lightly.
What do you do if you experience headlight failure?
Try the headlight switch a few times. If it doesn’t work, put on the emergency flashers, turn signals, or fog lights and pull off the road
