Lane Controls Flashcards
What represents a restricted lane?
There will be a white diamond painted on the road within the lane, and/or a sign posted at the side of the road that specifies its use. Examples are transit, bus, or bicycle lanes
What is a reversible lane? What are they marked by?
Lanes designed to carry traffic in one direction at certain times and in the opposite direction at other times. These lanes are separated by a barrier or marked by double broken yellow lines. Sometimes signs or lights are used
What does HOV (lane) stand for?
High Occupancy Vehicle
Describe an HOV lane
These lanes are identified by a white diamond painted on the roadway, signs will identify the types of vehicles and the number of occupants required per vehicle to use the lane
What are the rules of a shared turn lane?
These center turn lanes are reserved for turning and are used by vehicles traveling in both directions. You may turn onto or from the road using this lane. You may stop in this lane until it is safe to complete the turn. Must use this lane to turn. Not used to pass other vehicles.
What are the rules of a road with unmarked lanes?
Drive just to the right of the center of the road. Do not drive on the shoulder of the road. Same rules for passing and turning on a marked road apply to an unmarked road.
What is the first thing you do when approaching a roundabout?
Yield to traffic already within the rotary island
Does the law give anyone the right-of-way?
No. The law states who must YIELD the right-of-way
Driver vs pedestrian: who gets the right-of-way?
Pedestrian
True or false: bicycles on the road are considered vehicles and have the same rights and responsibilities as motor vehicles
True
What are the rules of a four way stop?
You must yield to the vehicle that reached the intersection first. When more than one vehicle reaches the intersection at the same time, the vehicle in the left must yield the right-of-way, allowing the vehicle on the right to go first
If two vehicles get to a four way stop at the same time, who goes first?
The car on the right goes first
At an uncontrolled intersection, who goes first?
The car on the right
True of false: when turning left, you must yield to all oncoming traffic
True
What does the “don’t do it if another vehicle must slow down for you” rule apply to?
Changing lanes, passing, and merging
Situation: two vehicles meet on a steep, narrow road which is not wide enough for both.
What happens?
The vehicle going downhill must yield right-of-way by backing up to a wider place or by stopping to leave sufficient space for the vehicle going uphill
Unless it’s more practical for the uphiller to yield
How do you yield to emergency vehicles?
Must pull over to the right edge of the road
How do you yield to an emergency vehicle when at an intersection?
Go through the intersection, then pull over to the right edge of the road
What do you do if an emergency vehicle has stopped along the side of the road on a roadway with two or more lanes? One lane road?
Try to leave one lane between your vehicle and the emergency vehicle by changing lanes, unless otherwise directed. On a one lane road, slow down to a safe speed and use care and caution
What are the rules about yielding to a school bus?
You must stop your vehicle at least 20 feet before reaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lugs flashing whether it is on your side of the road, the opposite side of the road, or at an intersection you are approaching. You must remain stopped till the lights are no longer flashing
Situation: you are in the same lane as a transit bus that has just stopped and is now signaling to enter the traffic lane. Are you required to yield?
Yes.
