Shapes of molecules Flashcards

1
Q

electron pairs repel each other

A
  • negatively charged so repel
  • lone pairs repel more than bonding pairs
  • greatest angles between lone pairs
  • bond angles between bonding pairs one often reduced by being pushed together by a lone pair repulsion
  • lone pair/ lone pair = biggest angle
  • lone pair / bonding pair = 2nd biggest
  • bp / bp = smallest

Q

shape of molecules

A
  • central atom
  • electrons in outer shell
  • how many atoms bonded
  • add electrons and divide by 2 = number of electron pairs
  • compare number of electron pairs wit5h number of bonds to find lone pairs
