Shafts Flashcards
What are the 3 types of shaft forces
Torsional (tangential direction), transverse (radial direction), axial (axial direction)
Why is axial clearance important
Helps account for variations in temperature and tolerances in machine
Define a snap ring
A ring that clips on a shaft to constrain axial movement (think of robot hand wrist initial design)
Define a shaft hub
A part that connects another part (e.g. a gear) to a shaft using a key and constrains the part from rotating
Define a taper pin
A pin that is inserted through the hub and through the shaft as another way to constrain the rotational movement of a part on a shaft
Define a sunk key
A sunk key is a key that is inserted half in the keyway of the shaft and half in the keyway of the hub
