Engines Flashcards
Define crankshaft
The output shaft of an engine
Define sparkplug
Ignites the fuel mixture in the chamber
Define air filter
Cleans the air for the combustion reaction. Part of the intake manifold assembly
Define exhaust
Removes harmful chemicals from the engine
Define throttle assembly
The assembly that controls how much fuel is let in
Define carborator
Mixes the air from the intake manifold and gas mixture from the throttle assembly and outputs it
Define gaskets
Helps seal fluids in between parts
Define internal combustion engine
An engine where the combustion happens within the cylinder
Define cylinder
The place where combustion reactions occur
Define valves and rocker arm
A rocker arm opens and closes valves which allow the air fuel mixture to enter a cylinder. There are 2 valves: the intake valve and exhaust valve
Define dipstick
A stick that measures the level of oil in an engine
Define cam shaft
A shaft with egg shaped parts that opens and closes the valves. The cams are the eggs.
Define a stroke
The distance a piston travels.
Define 4 stroke engine
Stroke 1: piston at top and sucks air fuel in until it bottoms out
Stroke 2: piston goes back up to compress fuel and gets ignited by sparkplug
Stroke 3: combustion pushes piston down (the momentum caused by this stroke powers all other strokes)
Stroke 4: exhaust takes out all the products of the reaction as piston moves back up
How does the rope start the engine
The rope is wrapped around so when it is spun, centripetal force causes tangs (spikes) to catch onto the engine and turn it. After the engine starts, the tangs fall back down and don’t get caught in the engine.
