Define tac welding
A temporary form of welding to hold things in place before being fully welded
Define reaming
A way of making a hole or bore very precise using a reamer after it has been drilled
Define boring
A way of making an existing hole larger
Define bellcrank
A lever with 2 arms and a fulcrum in the center. In a car, it changes the vertical motion of a wheel to a horizontal motion of the suspension. In a bell where the rope is vertical, a bell crank hits the bell horizontally when someone pulls vertically. Can change the mechanical advantage of a system depending on length of arms.
Define topology optimization
A way of optimizing the amount of material used to hold a bear minimum stress. However, unexpected stresses can cause the optimized part to break. Also very difficult to manufacture.
Define heat treating
Heating and cooling a part to make it harder and more resistant to wear. Works by changing the atomic structure of a material through atomic vibrations in the form of heat.
Define end mill
An end mill can cut into material sideways whereas drill bits can only cut in vertically.
What is pitch diameter
The diameter of a gear from the middle of the tip and root
What is a rod end
A part with a bearing in an eye shaped head with a shank that screws into a rod. Facilitates smooth 2D rotational motion of a rod
What are the benefits of powder coating
Scratch and abrasion resistant (but thicker so might mess up tolerances)
What is a blank for gears
The cylindrical profile first machined before the teeth are cut
Define brace, strut and column
Braces are diagonal members, struts are horizontal and columns are vertical members of a structure
What are hard points in a chassis
The kinematic skeleton that define the chassis structurally
