SG 4.3 Flashcards
Greenhouse Gases
Gases in the earths atmosphere that trap heat
Greenhouse effect
Energy that is not reflected back to space is absorbed as heat energy
Humans effect on greenhouse gasses
deforestation (less plants to take in C02), burning fossil fuels,
Climate Feedback Loops
Something that speeds up or slows down a warming trend
Positive Feedback Loops
The output of the systems reinforces or amplifies the change
Negative Feedback Loops
The output of the system acts to restrict the effects of the initial change.
Patterns of C02
Higher C02 concetration causes temperatures to
Rise
What do ice cores tell us about CO2 and temperature?
Ice cores show past concentrations of greenhouse gases. The cores contain bubbles with a sample of the atmosphere.
Over the past 800,000 years, Ice cores have shown us that temperatures and C02 emissions are
increasing
Water Vapor
Positive feedback loop. Increases in carbon dioxide, cause a rise global air temps. Increased evaporation and warmer air holds more water, water vapor levels in the atmosphere rise, which increases greenhouse warming.
methane
Positive feedback loop. Increased methane production can warm the Earth, which can in turn cause methane to be produced faster.
C02
Positive. As CO2 increases, it increases the warming of the atmosphere.
Clouds
Can be negative with dense, low level clouds. Higher temp increases the amount of cloud cover. The increased cloud thickness or amount reduces incoming solar radiation and limits warming.
