2.1 Flashcards
What is population?
group of individuals in a species in the same area at the same time.
What is population density?
concentration of a species in an area
what is population distribution
a measure of how spread out a population is
What is clumped distribution
population clustered in groups
What is uniform distribution?
distribution more of less equally spaced apart
What is random distribution?
distribution dispersed randomly with no predictable pattern.
Why do populations distribute the way they do?
These include local environmental factors, growth characteristics, and behavior (in animals)
How do you calculate population density?
total # of individuals/measurement of land area
What is direct count to measure population
counting every individual
What is indirect count to measure population?
counting every individual in an area and multiplying by the total number of areas
How do you calculate random sampling?
of organism in a sample/area of sample = total # (x)/total area
How do you calculate mark and recapture?
total marked/total organism(x) =total recaptured with marks/# of captured organisms
If there are 2,000 pine trees over an area of 10 square miles, what would the population density be?
200 pine trees/square mile
if there are 10 frogs living in a 200-square foot area, how many frogs can you predict would live in a 2000 square foot area.
100 frogs
What is the population density per mm if there are 6845 bacteria per 7 mm of blood?
978 (6845/7)
