Cannot do the vision test due to past TBIs or health issues
Benefits of looking for HGN
- Reliable
- Involuntary
- Noticeable
What causes HGN
CNS Depressants, Inhalants, and Dissociative Anesthetics
Indications of HGN (# of clues)
6 VALIDATIVE CLUES
- Lack of Smooth Pursuit (if in one eye, it will be in the other = 2 clues)
- Distinct and Sustained at Maximum Deviation (“”)
- Onset of Nystagmus Prior to 45 Degrees (“”)
Can you proceed with testing during HGN to find clues?
NO
Must have clues in consecutive stages to proceed
HGN (Clues required, and accuracy of clues)
4 out of 6 clues required
Indicates 88% accuracy of BAC 0.08 or over
Vertical Gaze Nystagmus (Application and what it indicates)
Not a part of the tests, but a good indicator of PC
Can indicate other drugs in the system (get a blood warrant) or that they are very drunk for their standard
