SEYMOUR FRACTURES Flashcards
1
Q
Seymour fracture definition
A
Distal phalanx physeal fracture with associated nail bed injury
2
Q
Most common location for Seymour fractures
A
Middle finger
3
Q
Mechanism of injury for Seymour fractures
A
Crush injury
4
Q
Deformity in Seymour fractures
A
Apex dorsal or mallet deformity Deforming forces: 1. Terminal extensor tendon - attaches to epiphysis of distal phalanx - pulls proximal fragment into extension 2. FDP tendon - attaches to metaphysis of distal phalanx - pulls distal fragment into flexion
5
Q
Differentiation between Seymour fractures and paediatric mallet fractures
A
Seymour fractures are SH I or II that do enter DIPJ
Paediatric bony mallets are SH III or IV
6
Q
4 main complications with Seymour fractures
A
- Mallet deformity
- Nail plate deformity
- Premature physeal arrest
- Chronic osteomyelitis
