Traditional classification of frostbite
A
4 degrees based on depth of soft-tissue damage
1st degree = central pale area with surrounding erythema
2nd degree = clear/ cloudy blisters
- form within 24hrs of rewarming
3rd degree = haemorrhagic blisters or black eschar
4th degree = soft-tissue necrosis

A
Superficial vs. deep frostbite
Superficial = 1st and 2nd degree frostbite = good prognosis
Deep = 3rd and 4th degree frostbite = poor prognosis
