Sexual selection Flashcards
What is Sexual Selection?
A mode of natural selection in which members of one biological sex choose mates of the other sex to mate with, and compete with members of the same sex for access to members of the opposite sex
Monogamy
one male & one female, no sexual dimorphism
Polygamy
both have multiple partners
Polyandry
female has multiple partners
Polygyny
male has multiple partners
How does sexual selection act?
Consequence is sexual dimorphism - the condition where sexes of the same species exhibit different morphological characteristics
Stronger sexual dimorphism correlated with stronger sexual selection
More predation = less dimorphism
Sexually selected traits have high variability and additive variance
Intrasexual selection
Type of sexual selection that occurs when members of the same sex (usually males) compete with each other for access to mates
Polygamy has a few winners, many losers, causes intense competition between species
Fighting, mate-guarding, sperm competition, lekking
Lekking - males gather and compete, females observe and choose the best
-Costly for males
Intersexual selection
Intersexual selection is a type of sexual selection where individuals of one sex choose mates based on certain traits or behaviors displayed by individuals of the opposite sex
Runaway sexual selection - evolution of ostentatious male ornamentation by persistent, directional female choice
