Sexual Reproduction In Flowers Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction in flowers?
Reproductive organs for flowering plants are contained in flowers. Most plants pollination is carried out either by insects or by the wind
What is the name of the male reproductive organ is flowers?
The stamen
What is the stamen made up of ?
The filament and anther
What is the anther?
The anther produces pollen grains which contain the male gamete sperm
What is the role of the filament?
The filament is the stalk holding up the anther
What is the name of the female reproductive organ in flowers ?
The carpel
What does the carpel consist of?
The pistil is made up of the stigma, style and ovary
What is the role of the stigma?
The stigma is at the top of the style and has a sticky surface
What is the function of the style?
The style is that stack which holds the stigma and the pollen tube does down
What is the function of the ovary?
The ovary contains ovules, gametes (eggs)
How does pollination occur ?
Pollination occurs when a pollen groan lands on a receptive stigma and begins to grow.
What is the structure of a seed?
After fertilisation, the ovule developed into a seed protected by a tough outer seed coat. As the ovule developed into a seed, the ovary in which the ovule is contained becomes a mature fruit.
