sexual reproduction Flashcards
haploid and diploid cells
half the number of chromosomes
diploid double the number of chromosomes
what are sex cells
haploid
sperm adaptations
head mainly containing genetic material also contains digestive enzymes to digest the outer coating
midpiece contains lots of mitochondria
look at penisand vagina diagram
sexual intercourse steps
mans penis is erect when entering vagina
semen is ejaculated into the top of the vagina
semen goes through cervix and uterus into fallopian tube towards the egg
if the sperm meets an egg sperm burrows into it .
fertilisation
fusion of haploid nuclei from male and female gamete.
steps from fertilisation to having a baby
nuclei fuse together restores chromosome number new cell is a zygote duplicates by mitosis and cell specialisation occurs. then embryo then foetus
steps of the menstrual cycle
pituitary gland secretes FSH which causes maturity of the follicle
as it matures it secretes oestrogen which stimulates the uterus lining thickening it.
when oestrogen levels are high lh is secreted which causes the ovum to be released.
progesterone is released which maintain the thickness of the uterus lining.
