respiration and photosynthesis Flashcards
what is photosynthesis
photosynthesis is the process that produces glucose
test for starch in a leaf
- put the leaf in boiling water stops chem rxns
- put the leaf in ethanol get rid of chlorophyll
- rinse the leaf in cold water and add iodine
chlorophyll test
take a variegated leaf some green parts
test the leaf for starch
suggests that only part of the leaf has chlorophyll as the rest is boiled off
test showing whether photosyn has taken place
leave plant in a place without light for 48 hours
then cut a leaf and test for starch
it wont turn blue black as it has used up its starch in repsiration
minerals needed
nitrates: contain nitrogen for making amino acids and proteins
phosphates: contain phosphorous for dna and cell membranes
potassium: regulates plant growth and health
xylem
xylem is carries water and mineral salts from the roots to the leaves in transpiration steam, made of dead cells.
phloem
transports amino acids and sucrose sugars
breathing
this is the process of moving air in and out of the lungs
CO2 indicator test
yellow if there are high levels of C)2 as lots has been produced.
purple if there are low levels
anaerobic chemical equation in plants products
2 C2H5OH + 2 CO2
how are leaves adapted
stomata begin to close as it gets dark, don’t need to be open to let CO2 in, water can’t escape. Guard cells increase in volum to open stomata and to close decrease in volume.
