Why was this CPS statement written?
Because kids with disabilities and chronic conditions are more likely to be sexually or physically abused than their peers.
What factors increase the risk of abuse in this population?
Dependency
Care facilities
This sensation or perception of being externally controlled because they cannot make decisions for themselves.
Sensation from the kids that because people are helping them all the time, their bodies are “owned” by others
Social isolation secondary to institutionalisation, hospitalisation, “special” education and/or overprotection
Social stigma - young people may believe that their abuse is deserved
Issues with privacy
Lack of sexual health education
Previous restrain during medical procedures - may teach them not to struggle
What are some symptoms of abuse?
STI Vaginal or anal trauma Unexplained UTI Unexplained fear of physical or synecological examination Avoidance of caregiver Self-harming behaviour Sleep disturbances Encopresis Sexualised behaviour Sexual experimentation with age-inapointpirat patterns Sexual abuse towards others Running away Somatic complaints that don't make sense
How can we prevent abuse on an institutional level?
Advocate for the following:
- Screening employees
- Chaperoning examinations
- Supervised outings
- Promoting an institutional culture that values privacy
Encourage parents to enquire about institutional policies.
How can you prevent abuse on an educational level?
Advocate for sexual education in school
Provide education for parents on different developmental levels and disabilities on personal rights, safer sex, and sexual abuse.
Early anticipatory advise re abuse risk and personal empowerment.
What can health care providers do in their day to day interactions with kids with disabilities?
Respect privacy
Respectful examinations, such as draping
Do not use restraints/holding unless necessary
