Do youth in custody have the same rights to consent and confidentiality as any other teenager?
Does this change if in an adult institution?
Yes.
Same access to health care, ability to consent and right to privacy/confidentiality
No change if in an adult institution
Do jails need to have a doctor?
No. the institutions need to have someone designated to oversee health issues, but this could be an RN or someone not in health care.
There is often an advisory committee that includes individuals that address administrative, medical and psychiatric needs. There should be a physician who is, at minimum, in consultation with the advisory committee.
When a teenager is admitted to a short term custodial facility, what are the medical requirements?
Assessed within 72 hours of admission in no acute concern. This assessment should include a medical and psychiatric history (including behavioural history)
Should determine if they are a danger to himself or others.
Should pay attention to substance abuse and risk of withdrawal.
Create an emergency plan
What are the most common and problematic withdrawal syndromes?
Opioids (heroin) and benzo/barbiturates
What are some symptoms of opioid withdrawal?
Depression Severe myalgias Nausea Chills Autonomic instability Diarrhea
What is the main risk of benzo withdrawal?
Withdrawal related seizures
What are the guidelines for providing medical care for kids in short term placements
They have a case manager who organizes a health assessment that includes a medical history and psychosocial assessment.
Create short and long term health goals, which can be managed in the facility and once discharged into the community. These goals should be communicated to the family/youth

A plan that covers medical, behavioural and psychiatric emergencies
Should be detailed
Should include a list of available resources.
What kind of staff must be present in a prison to ensure safety?
Someone trained in CPR

What are some of the potential consequences of high risk sexual behavior?
HIV
Hepatitis
Unplanned pregnancy

What environment must be available/provided in the jail?
