Sex, Gender, and Identity Flashcards
Spectrum of Human Sexuality
There is a spectrum of sexuality. Individuals in society may label themselves as heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, transgendered, lesbian, or gay. In addition, some may not label themselves at all and yet engage in activities that many would consider homosexual or queer behaviour.
How to Address Transgender Persons
Address them by their identified gender, not their birth sex.
Make sure to use the appropriate pronouns.
Gender and Sexual Orientation
A patient’s gender tells you nothing about their sexual orientation, and their sexual orientation tells you nothing about their sexual practices.
Risks to Transgender Patients
Transgendered individuals are at an increased risk of other mental health problems. The mental health concerns revolve around societal non-acceptance, and not their transgenderism by itself.
They are at a greater risk for…
- Social isolation
- Homelessness
- Depression
- Suicide
- Financial burdens from hormone / surgery
Harms from Homophobia
Homosexual patients can suffer deeply from homophobia, both as external consequences and internal consequences.
External consequences can be social isolation and suicide.
Internal consequences can be depression and stress.
DOH and Barriers for LBGT Patients
- Social support networks are often weak
- Workplace conditions and social environment may be unaccepting of them
- Clinical environments may be unaccepting; staff may be uncomfortable
- Culture can present unique barriers
- Physical environment may not be as open such as a lack of education or gender-neutral washrooms
