Sex identity
A biological term. A child’s sex can be identified by their hormones and chromosomes. Female or male.
Gender identity
Psychological term. A child’s gender can be identified by their attitudes and behaviour. Determines if the child is female or male
1st Freud stage
Oral. Lasts for the first 1 and 1/2 years.
2nd Freud stage
Anal. 1 and 1/2 years to 3.
3rd Freud stage
Phallic. 3 to 6 years. Oedipus and Electra.
4th Freud stage
Latency. 6 to puberty.
5th Freud stage
Genital. Puberty onwards.
Oedipus complex
A sons unconscious sexual attraction for his mother and is afraid of his father castrating him
Electra complex
A daughters unconscious sexual attraction to her father and is scared of losing the mothers love
Identification
To adopt the attitudes and behaviour of the same sex parent
Gender disturbance
Not developing the gender identity usually associated with one’s sex
Modelling
A role model provides an example for the child
Imitation
Copying the behaviour of a model
Vicarious Reinforcement
Learning from the models being either rewarded or punished
Media
Means of communication. Television, radio, the Internet and newspapers are all examples of media
