Polyester, nylon, rayon, acrylic
What are the different types of fibers?
Natural fibers and man-made. Man-made are made by machine. Natural fibers come from plants and animals.
Name examples of natural fibers
Wool & silk (from animals) cotton & flax (from plants)
What is interfacing? When do you use it?
Interface is for reinforcing and stiffening. Use it when sewing.
What is the standard seem allowance?
5/8 inch
Edge of pressed foot?
1/4 inch
What is nap fabric? When do you use it? Name an example
Nap fabric is when you only lay pattern pieces one direction cause of shading. Use it when you sew. An example is corteroy or velvet
What is grading?
Grading is cutting your seem allowance different widths to reduce the bulk.
How do you pre-shrink material?
1)wash then dry 2) for no washable material, steam press it
What is the selvage?
Finished edge of the fabric
What is top stitching for?
It’s done on the outside of garmet for decoration.
What do you use to mark your material?
Mark it with tracing wheel and tracing paper
What is stay stitching?
Sewing around a curved edge to keep it from stretching
What is back stitching?
Back stitching is sewing in reverse, every time you start or stop, use 3 or 4 stitches.
What do you do when you use the backside?
When you use the backside, press, don’t iron
