What is a site?
The actual place where a village or town grew up.
Name 8 natural advantages that would influence the location of a Settlement.
Protection with good views from hilltop locations
Plenty of water used for drinking, cooking and washing
Not too close to water to avoid any floods
Rivers that are easy to cross and used for transport
Building materials such as wood or stone
Shelter from winds, maybe better if it is south facing to get more of the sun.
Supply of wood used for building and burning for heat and cooking on.
Flatter land which is easier to build on and farm
What are settlement patterns?
The different shapes for settlements.
What is a dispersed settlement?
The buildings are well spread out. They are often found in highland areas where it is not easy to build houses close together.
What is a Nucleated settlement?
Buildings are closely grouped together. The settlements often grow around road junctions or river crossings. In the past
people built close to others for safety.
What is a Linear settlement?
Sometimes called ribbon settlements, they grew in long
narrow lines. These settlements developed along sides of roads or along valley floors where it was flat.
