What is a settlement?
A settlement is a place where people live.
Types of Settlements?
Types of Settlement include: Capital City, City, Town, Hamlet, Fishing Village, Mining Town, Resort, Market Town and Village.
Settlement hierarchy?
This is placing settlements in order based on size (area covered), population (number of people) and services (things that meet the needs of the people - library, shops etc).
Settlement problems?
Settlements can bring their problems: Pollution, Anti-social behaviour, Crime, Noise,Congestion, Over-crowding,Poor housing and Litter.
Shopping?
Types of shops include: Specialist shops, Department stores, Convenience store, Chain store, Supermarket, Retail Park, Internet.
What things do you consider when you choose where to shop?
Choosing where to shop is based on several factors: Price, Location, Image and quality. Sometimes, size and weight can be a consideration too.
What is meant by ‘Sphere of Influence’?
This how far people are prepared to travel to use the shops or services. Places selling expensive or unique items have a large Sphere of Influence, for cheaper goods its the opposite.
