Resources Flashcards
What is the cause of Global Warming?
Greenhouse gases are gases such as Carbon Dioxide that are helping to warm our environment by preventing the loss of heat from the atmosphere.
What is the Greenhouse Effect?
The Greenhouse Effect is the way that gases in the atmosphere trap some of the heat from the sun to warm our environment.
Explain the Greenhouse Effect?
- Sun’s heat passes through layer of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. 2. The earth is warmed by the sun. 3. The heat is trapped by the greenhouse gases. 4. Some heat escapes into space. 5. Increase in greenhouse gases caused by human activity. 6. Less heat escapes into space. 7. More heat is trapped and the earth heats up creating the Greenhouse Effect.
What are the effects of Global Warming?
The effects of Global Warming are: 1. Ice melts meaning sea levels rise - Arctic Ocean. 2. Drier conditions reduce Grain harvest - Great Plains. 3. Increase in number of storms - Caribbean Sea. 4. Many major Cities flooded - London. 5. Drier conditions cause loss of Rainforest - Amazon. 6. Desert advances North to replace crops - Sahara Desert. 7. Beaches disappear as sea level rises - Mediterranean Sea. 8. Ski resorts close due to lack of snow - The Alps. 9. Islands submerged by rising sea level - Maldives. 10. Increased flooding in coastal regions - Bangladesh. 11. Some areas become warmer and wetter - Europe.
Renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy that is collected from resources which are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and waves.
Give some examples of Renewable energy.
Examples of Renewable energy are: Wind turbines, Solar power, Hydro energy (Water) and tidal.
Non-Renewable energy?
Non-renewable energy resources are natural raw materials that are obtained from the environment, such as coal, gas, or oil that, once consumed, cannot be replaced.
The positives of Renewable resources?
The good thing about renewable energy is that it is naturally replenished.
The negatives of Renewable resources?
The negatives are: 1. Harnessing these natural powers is very difficult. It relies on expensive technology which may go wrong. 2. Renewable sources of energy are unreliable, it depends on the weather. e.g. you need the sun to shine for solar power and wind for wind turbines.
