Setting of London/houses Flashcards
‘Like a district in some city in a nightmare’
Connotations of ‘nightmare’ = evil and fear, so awful it shouldn’t be real, can conceal Hyde
Talking about Soho - where Hyde’s house is, adds to sense of foreboding
‘Move the more swiftly and still the more swiftly, even to dizziness, through wider labyrinths of lamplighted city’
Labyrinths - city is like a maze, disconcerting + confusing
Moving swiftly + repetition - knows the city well, a threat
Lamplighted - only a few points of safety therefore light
‘He eyed dingy, windowless structure with curiosity, gazed round with a distasteful sense of strangeness’
Windowless = secretive
‘Dingy’ ‘distasteful’ - very different to the welcoming atmosphere of his main house, showing his duality
‘Admitting the visitor into a large… comfortable hall, paved with flags, warmed by a bright, open fire
Lexical field of wealth, comfort
Fire = light, safety and warmth, associates Jekyll with all things good
‘A closet was filled with wine; the plate was of silver, the napery elegant’
Again lexical field of wealth and comfort, everything associated with gentlemen - doesn’t match what we know of Hyde, does with Jekyll
