Hyde Flashcards
‘There was something abnormal and misbegotten in the very essence of the creature that now faced me’
‘Abnormal’ and ‘misbegotten’ - Hyde is not usual, creates a feeling of alienation in people
‘Creature’ furthers this - less than human
‘The man seems hardly human. Something troglodytic, shall we say?’
‘Troglodytic’ again something primal and animalistic in its evil, ‘hardly human’ alliteration emphasises instant separation from Hyde
‘Mr Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth’
‘Bounds’ - binds of morality, law and society - none of these apply to him
‘Clubbed’ - very violent, almost pre human verb
‘To the earth’ - highlights how violent and extreme this crime was, went further ‘than necessary’
‘With ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows’
‘Ape-like fury’ - extreme, animalistic, violent - no sense of what is right
Graphic imagery (‘trampling’ ‘hailing down’) - makes the reader very against Hyde
‘Trampled calmly over the child’s body and left her screaming’
Innocence associated with children - emphasises cruelty
oxymoron of ‘trampled calmly’ - disconcerting, didn’t even react to what he did
‘Left her’ - doesn’t help her, inhumane
‘Trampled’ and ‘screaming’ - very vivid imagery, vicious
‘I saw what I saw, I heard what I heard, and my soul sickened at it’
Repetition + very simple sensory description - no eloquence can describe Hyde, he is pure evil + overwhelms you with the sense of it
‘Soul’ - everything about him is affected
