SETTING AND STREAMING Flashcards
what is setting
the student is placed in different sets for different subjects based upon their ability
what is streaming
the students are in the same ability group for all the subjects
two ways the structure of schools can impact on the formation of pupil subcultures
setting and streaming
ethnocentric curriculum
how do low sets and streams lead to underacheivement
lower level work and knowledge
foundation, vocational, coursework
leads to blocked opportunities and low self esteem from being labelled as a failure
how do high sets and streams shape pupil identity and prospects
halo effect - positively labelled- more attention from teachers + increase in expected results
internalised by student + motivates them to fullfill prophecy of success
gives student confidence
pro school attitude - joins extracurriculars - increases cultural capital
how does setting and streaming lead to the formation of pupil subcultures
students polarised based upon labels from teachers and therefore aware that differentiation occurs once they have been labelled
those labelled positivley will adopt pro school attitudes and form subcultures
those labelled negatively more likely to reject ethos of school and bond with similar students, rejecting traditional pathways to obtain status
how does setting and streaming link to educational oppurtunities
pro school subculture formed in top sets and streams - more likely to engage in a range of activities - boost there cultural and educational capital (good for unis)
anti-school subcultures likely to reject potential educational opportunities as education is seen as negative or too feminine
what would functionalists say about setting and streaming
its based upon ability so its a legitimate method of ensuring role allocation
what would marxists say about setting and streaming
attempt to legitimise inequality - setted and streamed by social class characteristics not ability
what does being critical of setting and streaming not explain
in mixed ability sets WC and ethnic minority groups still struggle to achieve good grades
