MATERIAL DEPRIVATION Flashcards
define material deprivation
a lack of financial and other necessary resources needed to succeed in education.
what are some examples of material deprivation
no internet
overcrowded homes
poor nutrition
caring for younger siblings
poor housing
frequently moving homes
lack of educational resources
what did David Bull explore in relation to material deprivation and when did he research it
free schooling had hidden costs such as uniform, transport, food, equipment
1980
what did Howard explore in relation to material deprivation and when did she research it
poorer homes have poorer nutrition which affects health and increases absence from school
2001
what two social groups are affected by material deprivation
working class
minority ethnic groups (pakistan, afro-caribean)
what are two out of school factors for the educational acheivement of different social groups
lack of material resources/access to internet for WC students - may get behind on school work then
some WC and minority ethnic students have to look after younger siblings while their parents work - can lead to missing school or falling behind with school work
what are three at home factors that can influence a childs education
overcrowded home - may not have a quiet space to study, may be disturbed by siblings when trying to sleep
diet can impact on students ability to concentrate. cheaper processed foods lack vitamins and minerals necessary to stay healthy, may lead to absences due to sickness
WC more likely to live in rented accom - more frequently moving schools - disruption to education
how can lack of resources affect education
- cant purchase textbooks, no internet access
- not able to complete schoolwork, meaning they fall behind
- could then be negatively labelled, may have to do additional work to catch up
how can travel costs affect education
- unable to afford travel to school everyday
- will miss lessons or will have to go to a more local underperforming school
- lower quality of teaching, gaps in lesson knowledge, falling behind in school
how can uniform costs affect education
- cant buy new uniform, hand me downs
- students dont feel as confident, may get into trouble due to regulations, get bullied for what they are wearing
- possible truency due to bullying, isolation or exclusion for wearing wrong uniform
how can living in an overcrowded space affect education
- shared bedroom, no quiet study area
- unable to concentrate/fall asleep in class due to tiredness of being distirbed in the night, behind on hw
- negative labelling, seen as disruptive, self exclusion, poor exam results
how can looking after siblings affect education
- less time to do school work, extra curriculars
- fall behind on schoolwork/may have to skip school to pick up younger siblings
- gaps in attendance, fall behind, unable to effectively revise
how can lack of correct uniform cause a student to be labelled
students are labelled negatively, more likely to be disliked by teachers.
teachers make a judgement on their attitude to school
how can lack of resources be linked to setting and streaming
unable to access the internet might mean students are unable to complete hw, fall behind, and are placed in lower sets and streams
how can lack of resources affect subject choice
may not choose subjects like science and technology due to cost of lab coats and equipment
how can travel costs affect achievement
due to not being able to afford bus passes ect. may miss days of school meaning that they get behind in school and then therefore underperform
how does looking after siblings affect extra curricular activities
due to parents working longer shifts, have to look after siblings meaning they haven’t got time to do extracurriculars
how does lack of money link to nike identities
inability to purchase quality uniform leads to labelling, students then start to associate with WC identity of sportswear
how does moving from rented accommodation affect the experience of education
more likely to move house more often - moving schools - gaps in education, disruption/inconsistent education
how does damp or dangerous housing affect access to schools
illness + poor attendance caused by inadequate housing may have a negative effect on their selection for secondary schools
how does the education maintence allowance help students with material deprivation
helped increase number of WC students staying on in education post 16 - but abolished when made compulsory until 18
what impact has free school meals had on students with material deprivation
some students who qualify dont accept free school meals due to stigma attached/bullying
what impact has pupil premium had on students with material deprivation
impacts negligiable as additional money is often not spent directly on children concerned but on other projects such as IT
what impact has school resources had on students with material deprivation
schools had provided libaries and equipment but recent cuts to educational funding has seen schools resort to donations from parents
what impact has introduction of city centre academies had on students with material deprivation
first wave of academies were relatively successful in short term as gave positive self esteem to children.
later attempts to academise met with mixed results
what social groups have achieved despite suffering material deprivation
chinese, indian, african (especially girls)
what other factors might impact on a childs educational acheivement
cultural, in school factors
how would functionalists explain material deprivation
if students are able then material deprivation is irrelevant as meritocratic principles will enable them to acheive
how would marxists explain material deprivation
WC are kept in their position as schools look to control the WC by judging them on lack of capital
