What happened in Key Scene 1?

A
  • As Lieutenant Nichols was sketching DS, his drawings appeared on the screen above during opening scenes in Devon.
  • Date and location projected throughout.
  • In major war scene, when the soldiers ‘went over the top’, red blood splatters appeared on the screen which slowly morphed into poppies.

Q

What impact did this have on Key Stage 1?

A
  • Simple but effective way of allowing the audience to follow the narrative as it moved location and time.
  • Enabled the audience to see what he was viewing. We quickly understood the strong relationship that Albert had with Joey and how much he loved riding him.
  • Hugely symbolic - we instantly understood the huge loss of life and the poppies allowed us to remember how many lives were lost and the great sacrifice that these men made.
