Session 9 - Surf Anat, Reff Pain & Gross Anat of the Abdominal Wall Flashcards
What is the upper extent of the abdominal cavity?
Anteriorly - Under surface of the diaphragm reaching the 5th intercostal space
Describe the 9 regions of the abdominal wall
(look at image)
2 vertical lines from midclavicular points
2 horizontal lines across lowest point of thoracic cage
2 horizontal lines from tubercles of iliac crest
NAME USING IMAGE
Describe the nerve supply to the skin of the abdominal wall
Dermatome
(Path of the dermatome)
Dermatomes of abdominal wall:
T5 in the upper epigastrium
T10 at umbilicus
T12 just above suprapubic area
Each dermatome starts at the back at the level of the named vertebra, they run downwards as they pass around the trunk to the anterior abdominal wall
How is the rectus sheath formed?
In upper 2/3 of abdomen - the aponeurosis of the external oblique muscle passes in front of the rectus abdominis and the aponeurosis of transverse abdominis passes behind
The aponeurosis of the internal oblique sends fibres both in front and behind the rectus abdominis
The lower 1/3 of the abdomen, al three aponeuroses pass in front of the rectus abdominis
What is the surface marking of the aortic bifurcation?
The level of the umbilicus
In which regions of the abdomen is pain from the three parts of the bowel felt?
● Foregut - epigastrium
● Midgut - umbilical
● Hindgut - suprapubic
Describe the anatomy of the 6 pack
What muscle?
Where does it run from and to?
What creates the “6 pack” look?
Rectus abdominis runs vertically from the pubis up to the costal margin
There are 3 places along its length that become tendinous
When exercise the muscle largens but the tendinous part stays the same
The result if three bulges of muscle between the tendons - this occurs on both sides of the midline
