What is the function of the Eustachian tube?
To equalise the air pressure on either side of the tympanic membrane.
This is important for optimal movement of the tympanic membrane
Why is the maxillary sinus more prone to infection?
The opening of the maxillary sinus into the nasal cavity is at the top of the
sinus so it does not drain easily
What is the nerve supply to the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
General Sensation - Mandibular nerve
Taste Sensation - Facial nerve
Muscles - Hypoglossal Nerve
Where do the ducts for the submandibular salivary glands open into the mouth?
Below the tongue
Why may disease in the maxillary sinus cause numbness of the cheek?
The sensory nerve to the cheek passes in the roof of the maxillary sinus
What are the attachments of the muscles of the tongue?
The hyoid bone
What structure stops reflux of liquid into the nose during swallowing?
How does it do this?
Soft palate
The SP rises when we swallow and closes off the nasopharynx from the oropharynx
