What is the definition of a competent person?
has the knowledge or experience to perform inspection and write reports
What’s a loose gear?
any gear which a load can be attached to lifting equipment which is not an integral part of the lifting (slings)
what to take in account when selecting accessories for lifiting?
-loads to be handled
-gripping points
-loose gear for attaching the load
-atmospheric conditions
-type and configuration of slinging
Who should test lifting equipment?
-lifting equipment must be tested by a competent person
-no equipment be used unless tested
-after testing the equipment must be examined
When should there be a thorough examination of exposed equipment?
-at least every 6 months
-for other equipment; 12months
-inspect by a competent person at a suitable intervals
-no equipment should be used outside the ship or if obtained outside the ship
Reports and defects
1)inspector should provide a report on the defect to the employer
2)supply the employer with details of the defect
3)enforcing body must be informed of such defect (MCA in the UK)
4)As per MGN 332
How long should an inspection certificate be retained?
must be retained on ship for at least 2 years after receiving the certificate relating to the next test or report
In general what maintenance must be carried out on lifting equipment?
-Regular examination by a competent person, at least as often as required by the regulations and never than annually
What would you look for when carrying maintenance on lifting equipment?
-General material such as cracks, distortion, corrosion, and wear and tear
What should you do with any equipment that may have been subject to excessive load, exceeding SWL(safe weight limit)?
-Take out of service and until subject to thorough examination by a competent person
