Q

3 requirements for the ship design of a Timber carrier

A

Ship must have a forecastle of not less than standard height, and length shall not be less than 7% of ship’s length(length perpendiculars).
- If less than 100 m in length must also have a poop deck of standard height
- Ship shall be fitted with permanent bulwark at least 1 m in height

Q

What do you need to keep a good stability for a timber carrier?

A

-Ship should be supplied with comprehensive stability info which takes into account timber deck cargo e.g comprehensive rolling period tables or diagrams.(detailed data table that provides information on the time it takes for a ship to complete one cycle of rolling when subjected to external forces such as waves)

-stability of the ship at all times, including during the process of loading and unloading, should be positive.(When a ship has positive stability, it demonstrates a strong righting moment, meaning that if the ship is tilted to one side, it will experience a restoring force working to bring it back to an upright position.). Ensure before proceeding to sea

Ensure before proceeding to sea
-ship is upright
-ship has an adequate metacentric height
-ship meets the required stability criteria
-cargo is properly secured

Q

what are terms to describe two different types of Metacentric Height?

A

A ship with a high GM is termed “stiff.”(It returns quickly to the upright position after being heeled)
A ship with a low GM is termed “tender.”(It returns slowly to the upright position after being heeled)

Q

Give 5 requirements for the lashing of timber

A

-independent overall lashing to secure points on the deck at max 3 m spacing, for cargo up to 4 m height.

-Space reduced to 1.5 m for cargo heights above 4 m

-if timber less than 3.6 m in length, then lashing spacing to be reduced

-minimum strength of lashings, breaking strength shall not be less than 13.6 tonnes

Q

How should timber be stowed

A

-timber to be stowed in the fore and aft direction

-all outboard packages must be fore and aft

-some packages must be placed across the ship, side to side to produce binding effect within the load

Q

During the voyage, what should you as the OOW do?

A

-ship’s heeling angle and rolling period must be checked

-check the lashings regularly

-soundings of tanks and void spaced must be checked regularly

-before entering into any enclosed space, master must ensure: risk assessment, permit to entry, BA set to be worn

Q

What’s the ship’s heeling angle?

A

it is the degree to which a ship tilts or leans to one side in response to external forces such as wind , waves, or uneven distribution of weight.
