Session 8 - Integration of Mind and Body Flashcards
Which deranged levels have been shown to be amended in an intervention of body-mind medicine?
Immunoglobuin A & Cortiosl
True or False - Oxytocin is released when you hug someone and during the stress response
True (oxytocin is released during stress so we reached out to loved ones, talk about it and cry about it)
How do parts of the body communicate to eachother?
Glands that secrete chemical messengers called hormones
What neuroendocrine axis plays an important role in the regulation of the stress response?
HPA - Hypothalamus-pituitary-axis
What is the negative feedback loop for cortisol?
o Negative feedback loop: Cortisol will restrict secretion of ACTH, so cortisol comes down to normal rate (negative feedback loop). This is not happening to everyone in current environment and lifestyle.
What are the different types of stress?
Distress (boredom)
Eustress (functional/motivational/excitement)
Distress (excessive stress)
What happens to natural killer cells during stress?
Any type of stress leads to a 50% reduction in natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxic activity. A fall in NK cell activity, hence reduces immune response.
What are high levels of epinephrine associated to?
Lower igA (immunoglobulins) concentrations
True/False - Cytokines produced by immune cells or adipocytes can stimulate the HPA axis
True
What nutrients can help chronic stress? Give rationale.
Omega 3’s & Vitamin A - improves cognitive responses after psychological stress. Reduces cortisol & inflammatory markers.
Magnesium - reduces cortisol concentration
Vitamin C - reduces physical and psychological effects of stress.
Probiotics (lacto & bifido) - decreases acute stress, cortisol, depression.
Zinc - DNA damage, repair enzymes, immune response
B’s - reduces homocysteine, supports HPA
