Session 7: Cartilage Flashcards
TRUE OR FALSE: Cartilage is avascular.
TRUE: it consists of an extensive ECM and chondrocytes
Name the three types of cartilage.
- Hyaline Cartilage
- Elastic Cartilage
- Fibrocartilage
Describe hyaline Cartilage.
- Chondrocytes present singly or in isogenous groups
- matrix containing GAGs and type II collagen
Where us hyaline Cartilage found?
Articulating surfaces and respiratory tubes (I.e. Trachea, bronchi, larynx)
What is perichondrium?
Dense CT which covers the margin of hyaline Cartilage.
What is appositional growth?
Growth from the periphery
What is interstitial growth?
Laying down of matrix in the centre therefore growing inside out
What is lacuna? (Pl. lacunae)
Cavity surrounding a chondrocyte
What type of Cartilage is used as a precursor model for bone?
Hyaline Cartilage
Describe elastic Cartilage.
Same as hyaline plus shit tons of elastic fibres
TRUE OR FALSE: hyaline Cartilage calcifies with age.
True
Where is elastic Cartilage found?
- External ear (pinna)
- Epiglottis
Describe fibrocartilage.
- Combination of dense CT and hyaline Cartilage
- Cells distributed in rows
- NO perichondrium
Where is fibrocartilage found?
- Intervertebral disks
- Pubic Symphysis
