Session 6: Epithelial Tissues Flashcards
What is a mucous membrane?
Epithelium which lines internal tubes which open to the exterior.
Name 3 tracts which are lined by a mucosal membrane.
- Alimentary Tract
- Urinary Tract
- Respiratory Tract
What are the layers of a mucous membrane?
- Epithelial layer
- Lamina propia (CT)
- Muscularis mucosa (smooth muscle ONLY IN ALIMENTARY TRACT)
What is a serous membrane?
A thin, 2 layered membrane which lines certain closed cavities within the body.
Name three serous membranes.
- Peritoneum
- Plural sacs
- Pericardium sacs
What layers does serous membrane consist of?
- Simple squamous epithelium (MESOTHELIUM)
2. thin layer of CT
Define basement membrane.
Thin, flexiable, acellular layer between epithelium and CT
Name 3 locations of simple squamous.
- Lining of vessels/ body cavities
- Bowmans capsule (kidney)
- Alveoli
Name 3 locations of simple cuboidal.
- Kidney tubules
- Thyroid
- Ovaries
Name a 3 locations of simple columnar.
- Small intestine (microvilli)
- Colon
- Stomach
Name a location of pseudo-stratified epithelium.
URT
Name 3 locations of stratified squamous.
- Where ever you can put you ** in
2. Inner Eye lid
Name a location of keratinised stratified squamous.
Epidermis
Name the 4 layers of the epidermis.
- Horny layer
- Granular layer
- Prickle cell layer
- Basal layer
What occurs in the basal layer of the epidermis?
Keratinocytes divide by mitosis
